Levels and XP

Last updated: 24 September 2026

Members earn XP when they chat. XP adds up over time. When a member has enough XP, the member goes up a level. This page tells you how XP and levels work. It also tells you how to control where members earn XP.

How a member earns XP

  • A member earns XP when the member sends a message.
  • The bot gives XP one time each minute for each member. This stops members from spam.
  • Bots, webhooks, and system messages do not earn XP.
  • A forwarded message does not earn XP.

How levels work

Each message adds a small amount of XP. The XP adds up to a total. When the total is high enough, the member goes up one level. Each level needs more XP than the level before it. This makes the higher levels more difficult to reach.

Each level range gives one coloured tier role. To learn about tier roles, see the Tier roles page.

Level-up announcements

The bot can send a message when a member goes up a level. You control this on the XP page. There are three modes:

  • Same channel as the message. The bot sends the message in the channel where the member sent the last message.
  • A specific channel. The bot always sends the message in one channel that you choose.
  • Off. The bot does not send a level-up message.

Where XP is earned

You can stop XP in some channels or for some roles. The XP page has two lists: "Earns XP" and "No XP". A channel or role in the "No XP" list earns nothing. Everything else earns XP as normal.

  1. Open the XP page.
  2. Find the channel or the role in a list.
  3. Click the channel or the role to move it to the other list.
  4. Click the save button.

The bot must see a channel

The bot must be able to view a channel to give XP there. Discord does not tell the bot about a channel that the bot cannot see. So a channel that the bot cannot see earns no XP for anyone.

The dashboard shows a red message when the bot cannot see a channel. To fix this, give the bot permission to view that channel in Discord.
